One of the greatest gifts of Hispanic heritage, as the Rev. Victoria Umana says, is unity. For Latinos and Hispanics, family unity is essential, and that same spirit of togetherness extends into faith. She believes that sharing unity in Christ’s love among communities is stronger than any difference of tradition or language. Her life and ministry embody this truth.
A proud Latina, from El Salvador, and now the ninth vicar of Christ the King Episcopal Church in Alief, Rev. Umana represents the power of Hispanic women in leadership within the Church.
She loves to dance and listen to music, so if you see her dancing, don’t be surprised. For her, joy is a way of celebrating the life and gifts God has given, a reflection of the vibrant culture she carries.
In the Episcopal Church, she found a spiritual home where she could be welcomed, ordained, and called to share the Word of God. For her, bringing others to know Christ as Savior is a great and marvelous gift. Today she rejoices that her family has joined her in the Episcopal faith, becoming part of a community where they feel welcomed, can participate fully, and are growing together.

This Latina woman, filled with love for God and her community, shows us how Hispanic culture’s gifts of joy, unity, and resilience draw us closer to God’s purposes. Her story reminds us of the joy of seeing dreams fulfilled as she now serves as both a priest and a rector, a living witness to the strength and faith of Hispanic women in our Church.
