The Rev. John Dublin Epps Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE) is excited to host the 5th Annual Holy Grill and Family Fun Fest on Labor Day, Monday, September 2, 2019. This year’s event, featuring some of the best barbecue in Houston, will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church located at 1805 West Alabama Street in Houston. Hours for the Holy Grill are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come and join the fun!
This event serves as a youth mission fundraiser for UBE in the Diocese of Texas. Each year the Holy Grill is held at a different church in the diocese to bring awareness about UBE and to raise funds for youth scholarships to attend events, camps, conferences and conventions in the diocese and the National Church. Our youth and young adults have a vibrant presence in UBE and in their home churches.
Most recently, the John Epps Chapter assisted in sponsoring 12 young people to attend the UBE National Conference in Los Angeles this summer, several of whom, from the Diocese of Texas, were featured in an Episcopal News Service publication. The students participated in workshops, Bible studies, community service projects and worship. The Youth and Young Adults worship service was a highlight of the conference. Children participated in the worship as acolytes, torch bearers, and readers. The Holy Spirit Dancers of St. James’, Houston gave a moving performance of praise to “Gracefully Broken.” The Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev. Michael Curry was the celebrant and took photos with the young people after the service.
The Holy Grill and Family Fun Fest is an event for the entire family with an emphasis on FUN. There will be games and activities, music and dancing, a silent auction, concessions and desserts, vendors, t-shirts and barbecue!! Barbecue dinners will be served for $10/plate. Each plate includes two grilled meats and three sides dishes. Holy Grill T-shirts are $15. Dinner tickets and t-shirts are available now at St. James’, Houston and from any member of UBE.
In conjunction with the Holy Grill is the BBQ Brisket Cook-off – UBE is calling all BBQ Pit Masters for the Holy Grill BBQ Brisket Cook-off Contest. Individuals and teams may enter the Brisket Cook-off. Each team will enter one brisket for judging. Participants must supply their brisket, and it must arrive already-prepared on an outdoor grill or barbecue pit. Competitors are competing for the coveted Holy Grill Challenge Trophy, cash prizes and bragging rights. Last year’s winners from St. Andrew’s, Houston in the Heights are eager to hold on to the trophy for another year!
Entry fee is $25 due by August 25. Secret celebrity judges will decide the winner at the Holy Grill on Labor Day. For more information, email johndeppsube@gmail.com or call 832.687.0044.
